OVERVIEW

Sacred and Profane Love in XVIIth Century British Poetry and its influence on Modernist Aesthetics

The course will analyze a collection of XVIIth Century British Poems, with particular attention to the work of John Donne, George Herbert, William Crashaw, Herny Vaughan, Thomas Traherne and Andrew Marvell. It will then focus on T.S. Eliot's _Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry_ to discuss the influence of XVIIth Century British Poetry on Modernist Experimentation.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

The courses involve lectures and workshops; they aim to provide students with a deep knowledge of British literature and culture from the Renaissance to the present age. Students will also learn and discuss all the critical and theoretical issues involved in the establishment of the literary canon and in its recent revisions

Students will develop their ability to question and think critically about literary texts.
They will also improve their ability to interpret literary texts from different angles and to write short critical essays about them.

TEACHING METHODS

Interactive Lectures in English and literary workshops. Students might be interested in an individual or group project.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

A) A collection of poems by John Donne, George Herbert, William Crashaw, Herny Vaughan, Thomas Traherne and Andrew Marvel, edited by the teacher. 

B) T.S. Eliot's _The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry_, edited and introduced by Ronald Schuchard, 1993,  to discuss the influence of XVIIth Century British Poetry on Modernist experimentation.

Students will also be introduced to the political, religious and cultural debate of the 17th century, as well as to the main radical 'isms' of 20th century European Modernism, with particular attention to the influence of the visual arts and of music on literary texts.

 

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

A collection of XVIIth century British Poems and a list of Critical Essays will be available at Copycolor Copyshop in Via Balbi before the beginning of the course (end of February 2017). Other material will be provided by the teacher, it will also be available in aulaweb.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

This course is assessed by written examination. Language of examination: English The exam paper covers all parts of the syllabus. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam aims at testing the knowledge of the historical cultural context as well as the ability to analyze critically a literary text.

Only for attending students: attending students can prepare a short presentation on a specific topic which will be discussed in class in the second half of May 2017. The presentation will be evaluated as part of the exam.
