Special steels, other than carbon steels, and special applications need a deep knowledge in metallurgy and a wide vision on the impact of alloying elements effect and of thermal treatments suitable to match practical needs. TO face the constant evolution of the demand and to open new fields of application a suitable education together with an open mind creativity based are needed.
The Metallurgy 2 classes main goals are to reinforce and to consolidate the base knowledge on steels, to give an overview on some non ferrous alloys (copper and aluminum base). Castability of copper alloys, welding techniques and the usage of metals in special applications (e.g. stacking of fuel cells) are treated topics as well as the application investigation applied to archaeological and historical cultural heritage materials.
Alloying elements effect on steel characteristics
special steels
stainless steel
special applications and metal - environment interactions
Most of the classes are held in the classroom with the support of practical examples and case studies
Laboratory sessions are applied for those students having this planned in their course.
The slides of the treated topics are distributed at the end of the lessons.
Strengthening methods in steels: alloying steels, cold hardening, age hardening. Evaluation of quenching behaviour of steels according to Grossmann and Jominy. Effect of alloying elements on steel properties. classification of steels. Maraging, Austempering, Low alloyed, HSLA, Stainless steels. Introduction to powder metallurgy. Fundamentals of corrosion at low and high temperature. Fuel cells with special attention to stakcing. Laboratory experiences about casting and visit to metallurgical firms.
