AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide a comprehensive discussion of the fundamentals of basic and applied electrochemistry; techniques of corrosion protection and corrosion control for those who must confront, without advocating any of intensive professional courses, with an initial approach to the diagnosis and discussion of the problems of degradation of metallic materials in contact with the external environment.

Knowledge and understanding of fundamentals of electrochemistry. Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms, methods of control and prevention.

Applied electrochemistry:

primary batteries (alkaline battery, Li battery, Zn-air battery…)

secondary batteries (Lead-acid battery, Ni-MH battery, Li rechargeable battery, Na-S battery…)

Fuel Cells fundaments and applications

Principles of electrodeposition

 

Fundamental mechanisms of corrosion, methods of control and prevention

• Correlation between morphology and corrosion phenomena

• Mechanism of chemical and electrochemical reactions involved in corrosion nucleation

• Electrodeposition, main types of cells, characteristics and applications

• Inhibition and control of corrosion

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Examination includes questions on theoretical aspects of electrochemistry (basic and applied electrochemistry); general corrosion, its prevention and protection; the morphologies of attack and the factors influencing the selection of materials and methods of protection in service environment.
