CREDITS | 6 credits during the 3nd year of 8765 Material Science (L-30) GENOVA |
SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR | FIS/07 |
LANGUAGE | Italian |
TEACHING LOCATION | GENOVA (Material Science) |
SEMESTER | 1° Semester |
The class aims to illustrate some of the basic concepts of nuclear physics and of ionizing radiation and to describe some non-destructive techniques for compositional analysis of materials that derive from this field of physics. Energy production by nuclear fission/fusion as well as radiocarbon dating will be also addresssed
The student is supposed to lear how to solve simple problems/exercises related to the program of the class. A oog reference i sthe collection of the final test which can be found in https://www.ge.infn.it/~prati/Fisica%20applicata%20per%20scienze%20dei%…

Normal class with lessons for 4 hour/week
Basics of nuclear physic and of ionizing radiation:
The structure of the atomic nucleus
Nuclear reactions and radioactive decay
Fission nuclear fusion
Nucleosynthesis and abundance of elements in the universe
Interaction of electrons, ions and photons with matter
Biological effects of ionizing radiation, dosimetry and radiation protection
Operating principles of radiation detectors and spectrometric chains
Operating principles of low energy ion accelerators
Methods for non-destructive material analysis:
14C dating and thermoluminescence
Non-destructive analysis with ion beams, X-ray fluorescence and neutron activation
Application examples: air pollution and cultural heritage
