Because of its anatomy, mouth is frequently subjected to traumatic, inflammatory and infectious insults; hence is a specific target for many drugs characterized by local or sistemic activity. The knowledge of the characteristics of those drugs that are most commonly used to treat affections of mouth and teeth, their contraindications and their side effects represents essential requisites of dental hygienist
The course of pharmacology for dental hygienists is aimed to provide students basal knowlwdge about therapeutic indications, controindications and side effects of these drugs that are most commonly employed to control inflammatory and infectious conditions of mouth and teeth.
The aim of the course of pharmacology is to train future professionist in dental hygene towards a conscious use of prarmacological tools, focusing on those required to treat patologic conditions of mouth and teeth. The course is divided in two different, yet complementary parts. The first, propedeutic for the comprehension of the second studies the mechanisms of interactions between the body and the drugs (absorbance, distribution, metabolism and elimination); moreover, it studies cellular and systemic mechanism of action that are responsible for therapeutic efficacy and for unwanted side effects of drugs. The second part of the course examines pharmacological therapies that are associated with teeth surgery or to control inflammatory and infectious pathologies of thje mouth. Focus will be put on non steroidal antinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antinflammatory steroids, opiates and non opiates amnalgesic drugs, local anestetics, anticoagulants, antibiotics, antimicotics and antimicroblial agents.
