The course is focused on the methods for the qualitative analysis of pharmaceutically active (in)organic compounds. The different techniques will be presented by theory class as well as practice sessions in the laboratory.
The aim of the course is to provide the theoretical knowledge and the technical skills on the most relevant methods used for the qualitative analysis of a pharmaceutically relevant compound. At the end of the course, the student will be familiar with the different tests used for the chemical identification of the compounds and will be able to critically analyze the experimental results.
Organic and inorganic chemistry
Lessons and laboratory exercises.
Qualitative analysis of inorganic salts: systematic search of anions (phosphates, thiosulphates, iodides, bromides, chlorides, sulphates, nitrates) and cations (silver, barium, bismuth, copper, alluminium, iron, manganese, zinc, calcium, magnesium).
Qualitative analysis of organic compounds: preliminary assays and test for specific functional groups (alcohols, polyalcohols, carbohydrates, phenols, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amides, aminoacids, sulfonamides, pyridine and purine derivatives).
Spectroscopic methods: UV/VIS, IR, NMR, mass spectrometry.
