OVERVIEW

Applied Physics typically includes thermodynamics and heat transfer, whose knowledges are mandatory for a student in industrial engineering. Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer are treated according to a practical point of view, with reference to engineering applications, such as production and conversion of energy systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course is aimed at providing basic knowledge of applied thermodynamics and heat transfer, with specific attention to cycles, thermal plants,  thermo-fluids, heat transfer mechanisms. Theory will be integrated by practical exanples.

PREREQUISITES

Students are required to have successfully passed the exams of Analisi 1 + Geometria and Fisica Generale before applying for the exam of Fisica Tecnica

TEACHING METHODS

Typically four hours/week for both first and second semester, including theroretical and practical (exercises) lessons.

Interruptions of lessons (if any) will be announced by the teacher well in advance

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Closed and open systems. Thermodynamic state and properties. Temperature and thermometry. Thermodynamic processes. Definition of heat and work. First law of thermodynamics for open and closed systems. Internal energy and enthalpy. Specific heat. Secon law of thermodynamics, Kelvin and Clausius definitions. TdS equations. Ideal gas: state equation, properties, fundamental processes. Pure substances: definition, properties, thermodynamic diagrams. Cycles: Carnot, Joule, Otto, Diesel, Rankine, calculation of efficiency. Inverse cycles:  Carnot, two-phase, calculation of efficiency. Thermodynamics of fluids: Bernoulli equation and its applications, pressure drop in pipes. Incopmressible and compressible fluids, Hugoniot equation. Thermodynamic properties of humid air. Relative humidity. Mollier diagram. Trasformations of moist air. Air conditioning during summer and winter seasons. Heat transfer fundations: conduction, convection and radiation. Thermal-electric analogy: the thermal resistance and the thermal network.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination. Two written examination (not mandatory) during the lesson period

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Oral examination consists in answering two questions concerning the two parts of the course. Alumns are also requested to solve a practical exercise similar to those proposed during lessons.

There are two alternative methods to pass the examinations:

1. Two written examinations plus oral examination:

regular students will have the chance to participate to two written examinations throughout the course lessons (typically at the end of each semester), with marks ranging from 0 (not passed) to +3 points. A  cumulative minimum score of 2 points is required for the  access to the oral examination (within the month of September) without solving the practical exercise.

The final mark is given by the sum of the oral examination (from 18 to 30) plus the points obtained during the written examinations exceeding 2.

 (Example: two written examinations passed with marks +2 and +3 (total 5 points), respectively; oral examination evaluated 24/30 points:final mark:  24 + 5 - 2 = 27 points).

2.Two written examinations plus oral examination splitted into two parts

A cumulative minimum score of 2 points obtained for the two wwritten examinations will give the optional opportunity to split the oral examination into two parts: the first one in January-February concering the first part of the course and the sescond one, from June to September, concerning the second part of the course. The final mark will be the average of the two separate results plus the points gained during the written examinations, as explained in Section 1.

Dates of oral examinations are visible through the dedicated website; dates of written examinations are communicated during the lessons and in the Aulaweb Section.

Durante l'anno sono previsti due compitini facoltativi, il cui punteggio (da 0 a 3) in parte si cumula alla votazione orale e permette, se superiore ad una certa soglia, l'esenzione dall'esercizio da svolgere alla lavagna.
