LEARNING OUTCOMES

```Acquisition of analytical and experimental methods for the analysis of
time-varying physical system signals using their representations in the time
and frequency domains.```

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

```At the end of the course the student will be able to design an acquisition
system using commercial components and to analyze the data obtained both in the
time and frequency domain.
Furthermore, the student will have a basic knowledge of the concept of noise
and interference and will be able to calculate the instrumental limits and,
in the simplest cases, to correct any problems present into an experimental
system.

The student will also have an introductory knowledge to the concept of feedback
and to the problem of stability. In the simplest cases it will be able to
design a system, predict its stability or not and act accordingly to improve
its functioning.```

```Frontal lessons and practical group exercises in the laboratory during the

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

```Analysis of linear systems with Laplace and Fourier transform techniques.
Concept of correlation, autocorrelation, cross-correlation.

The noise.

Data acquisition with Labview

Various experiences in the laboratory demonstrating concepts studied in class.
Feedback systems: feedback concept, introductory examples, characteristic
equation, concept of poles and zeros of the transfer function.
Hint to the root locus technique.
Study of the stability of a system in the frequency domain.
Nyquist theorem and Bode theorem```

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

```Individual laboratory practical test or experimental thesis, then (if practical
test or thesis are judged sufficient) oral exam to complete the test.
The subject of the essay is agreed between teachers and interested students
and concerns topics of experimental physics.

The weight of the practical exercises on the final grade is 10%, the practical
test 50%, the essay 40%, the rest of the weight of the vote is provided by the
oral exam.```

ASSESSMENT METHODS

```The oral exam is always conducted by the responsible teacher and another expert
and has a duration that varies between about 20 and 40 minutes.
It is articulated on a fixed number of questions that focus on the exam program
and allows the commission to judge, in addition to the preparation, the degree
of achievement of the communication objectives, autonomy, etc.

The thesis allows the verification of the achievement of the following
objectives: practical use of the acquired knowledge, expertise on expressing
and reporting obtained results, etc.```
