    MODULES This unit is a module of:
    TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The aim of the course is to enhance the knowledge of sedimentary processes, sedimentary rocks and to provide an overview of the relationships between tectonics and sedimentation. Main topics include: transport and sedimentation processes, sedimentary structures, tectonically controlled sedimentary basins.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Attendance and participation in the planned training activities (lessons, classroom and field exercises) will allow the student to acquire advanced knowledge on environments and related sedimentary processes.
    Specifically, the student will be able to:
    • know, describe and classify the main types of arenites and limestones;
    • know how to distinguish and identify the sedimentary structures, associating them with sedimentary dynamics;

    • know how to connect the compositional, textural and structural features of sediments to environments and specific depositional systems;
    • know how to connect sedimentary types and structures to the tectonically controlled basins.

    TEACHING METHODS

    The course is blanded (in accordance with current COVID 19 containment rules) through multimedia presentations. The lab exercises will be addressed to the study in thin section of arenites and limestones, to the correlation of sedimentary rocks with facies and depositional systems. The field trip will aim to guide students to recognize sedimentary rocks and their depositional systems and environments.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    The main topics include transport and sedimentation processes, selective and mass transport, settling and gravity deposits, sedimentary structures, sedimentary environments, depositional systems and facies models, dynamics of depositional series and sequences, relations between tectonics and sedimentation, the petrography of arenites and limestones.

    RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

    The presentations used during the lessons will be available on AulaWeb.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    The exam consists of an integrated test between the two modules of the course. For a detailed description of the exam modalities, see Geology 2 - code 80270.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The pratical test will verify the effective acquisition of the necessary knowledge for the discussion of arenites and limestones.

    The oral test will focus on the topics covered during the lectures, the exercises in the classroom and the fieldwork. It will aim to assess not only if the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but also if he has acquired the ability to integrate the notions received from both modules. The ability to expose the arguments clearly and with correct terminology will also be evaluated.
