    TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

    OVERVIEW

The course deals with three main topics:

    - manoeuvrability (basic motion laws, standard manoeuvres, control means, manoeuvrability rules, different approaches for the evaluation of the manoeuvring characteristics)

    - seakeeping (basic motion laws, response amplitude operator, sea spectrum, ship motions in determined conditions, operability, stabilizing devices)

    - dynamic stability

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course deals with the motion law definition as well as the hydrodynamics characteristics regulating ship and yacht behaviour from the manoeuvrability, seakeeping and dynamic stability sides.

    TEACHING METHODS

Lessons on the different topics, Classwork for the development of a simplified manoeuvrability code (in Excel)

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Part 1: Ship Controllability (Introduction, Governing equations, Motion Stability, Manoeuvring characteristics and standard manoeuvres, Summary of existing rules, Model tests / Simulation, Steering devices / Rudder design, Slow speed manoeuvrability / Shallow and restricted waters, Planing crafts manoeuvrability)

Part 2: Seakeeping (Introduction, Linear systems – a review, Ship responses in regular waves, Ship motions – governing equations, Numerical approach (brief overview), Typical Response Amplitude Operators (RAO), Ship motions in irregular waves, Wave spectra – Response spectra, Ship Operability (short and long term), Means for active and passive stabilization of ship motions, Planing crafts seakeeping)

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The student will be evaluated by means of an oral examination on all the course program (including manoeuvrability, seakeeping and dynamic stability). There are three exams in summer (June, July, September) and two in winter (January and February), plus some additional exams during year to be agreed with the professor.

The exam will regard coursework had during the lectures and theory (usually two questions).

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will consist in the verification of coursework carried out during lectures and in the verification of the level of knowledge gained by the student. The oral exam moreover will allow to evaluate the communicating skills of the student.
