The goal of this course is that of developing and applying modeling and optimization tools to solve problems dealing with performance analysis and optimization of traffic networks. Different classes of dynamic models of traffic networks will be presented, based on various assumptions about the architecture for information exchange among the decision makers. Real time control problems are considered and possible control schemes are presented. The application of such schemes is discussed also with respect to the computational requirements and the needs for communication.
The objective of this course is that of providing to the student the conceptual and methodological tools necessary to model vehicle traffic systems. On this basis, analysis and control problems of vehicle traffic systems will be considered in detail. A specific emphasis will be given to the assumptions regarding the possibility of ground-vehicle communication (and vice versa) and on their impact over the model structures and the statement of the control problems. At the end of the course, the student will be able to find dynamic models of traffic systems and to state and solve, also using suitable software tools, performance optmization and real-time control problems
Lectures and computer exercises in the classroom.
Macroscopic traffic models for a single link. Models continuous in time and space. Discrete models. Traffic network models. Traffic network control problems. Decentralized control. Second order models (basic concepts).
The notes of the course will be made available to the students. They will include several bibliographical references.
Office hours: It is possible to meet the professor, on request, at different times.

Lectures and computer exercises in the classroom.
All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
Oral exam, that may include a discusssion of the reports about the computer exercises.
The exam has the objective of checking and evaluating the capability of the sudent to solve modelling and control problems for traffic systems, analogous to those presented during the lectures and solved within the computer exercises.
The exam will also test the degree of acquisition of the basic concepts and methods provided by the course
