TEACHING MATERIALS | AULAWEB |
This module provides the candidate with preliminary clinical and instrumental knowledge of major cardiovascular diseases, with the goal of gaining independency in the execution and interpretation of fundamental cardiological examinations.
Physiopathology and clinical presentation of major cardiovascular diseases will be discussed, with the goal of gaining progressive independency in the evaluation of patient’s clinical status and of the most appropriate diagnostic follow-up procedures needed, with a particular focus on echocardiography. Non-cardiovascular diseases of major clinical impact will be also discussed. The importance of communication between health care providers and with the patient will be examined, as well as of continuing education through scientific medical literature.
The course lasts 20 hours, with 18 hours of theoretical lessons, including the discussion of clinical cases which will help students recognizing primary cardiovascular diseases, and with a 2-hour practical lesson using echocardiography. As indicated in the University Guidelines for the first semester 2020-21, "mixed" teaching is provided, that is, it can be delivered both in presence and in telepresence, with synchronous and / or asynchronous methods.
The program will have a brief introduction on anatomy and physiology of the heart and the cardiovascular system. Then clinical and instrumental findings of principal cardiovascular diseases will be covered, with a particular focus on the hemodynamic aspects of each condition and recommended imaging modalities. Particular attention will be paid to valve heart disease, cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease.
The reference books are cardiovascular chapters of major internal medicine international books. Notes and slides of the lessons will be given to the students by each professor.
