The course deals with the main sociological theories of globalization and with its history, focusing also on migration as an important component of globalization processes.
Globalization processes are developing at different levels and in different institutional frames, creating new forms of interconnection and interdependence in the economic as well as in the political and cultural spheres. In a first part, the course deals with the main sociological theories of globalization and with its history. In a second part, it focuses on migration as an important component of globalization, paying specific attention to the main theories of migration and to the transformations of societies that these processes have contributed to cause.
The course is set to provide the students with sociological tools useful to study and understand globalization in its economic, political and cultural aspects, as well as migration processes.
Students will deal with the main sociological theories of globalization and with its history. They will aIso study migration as an important component of globalization, paying specific attention to the main theories aiming to explain these processes.
With regard to this second part, some lectures will focus on how transnational migrants can have access to welfare, within the frame of theories and empirical cases of "Transnational Social Protection".
Some basic knowledge of general sociology and contemporary history is required.
Frontal teaching.
In order to support and integrate textbooks, the teacher will upload teaching materials on Aulaweb, sending also links to videos related to the topics discussed.
As the course is scheduled in the first semester, it will be will be taught onlinbe, using both Teams and Aulaweb platforms.

Lessons are held in the first Semester, starting on September 14th, 2020.
Exams are oral, after a written test, all in the same day.
In case the health situation does not allow to sit exams "in presence", however, the exam will be only oral.
Exams are held by the Professor, jointly with other colleagues in sociological disciplines.
In the written test, the students will cope with 30 multiple answer questions on the main topics of the programme, in 45 minutes. Those who get at least 18 / 30 in the written test will gain access to the (mandatory) oral part. The exam will end with one mark only.
In case the health situation does not allow to sit exams "in presence", however, the exam will be only oral. The student is expected to answer three questions on the main topics of the programme.
