Large parts of the Italian territory and of the anthropized areas of the planet are subject to high risk for natural events. The risk assessment for extreme events is therefore essential to ensure the sustainability and safety of the built environment and represent a primary engineering objective.
The course will address the topic of seismic risk and emergency management. Starting from the basics of seismic hazard, seismic action and dynamic response of structural systems, the effects on environment and structures will be discussed, focusing on the concept of vulnerability of infrastructures, historical, modern buildings, urban aggregates. Evidence will be given to the filling of the forms for the damage, emergency provisions and practicability assessment of buildings and churches, finalized at the expeditious detection in the emergency phase following the earthquake.
At the end of the course, students should be able to characterize the hazard in relation to the natural events covered in the course. With particular regard to earthquake and floods, they should know the principles of the response of buildings, damage mechanisms, and discuss the main aspects of vulnerability. They will be able to understand the problems connected with the risk assessment and its mitigation, suggesting suitable actions for the emergency management. They will be able to manage large scale damage survey, recording and cataloging damage to new and historical buildings according to sound criteria.

oral interview
Students will have to discuss the impact on built environment of the natural events covered in the course. With particular regard to earthquake and floods, they will analyse the main aspects of the response to the considered events of a buildings, or an aggregate, or an infrastructure, pointing out the main elements of vulnerability. They will have to analyze the risk and discuss possible actions for its mitigation. They will have to illustrate the main steps for the emergency management. They should explain the structure of damage assessment forms, and discuss the criteria connected regarding a possible case study, also in order to define its vulnerability.
