Climate change affects the social and environmental determinants of health, clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter.
The course describes the complex factors that govern climate change, the interaction between oceans and athosphere and the level of CO2 concentration. The possible mitigation and adaption measures that can be undertaken are investigated, by a specific focus on the legislation applied to the industrial production.
The course provides competence about climate change and Greenhouse gases emissions (GHG), through the application of the Kyoto Protocol and the EU Emission Trading System.
On successful completion of this study, through lessons attendance and training activities such as oral lessons and exercises, the student should be able to:
The course has no specific prerequisites. However, for a successful learning, basic knowledge on mathematics, chemical and physics are required.
The course foreseen on-line lessons and exercises, use of calculation software
The following main topics will be covered in the course:
General overwiev about climate change
Mitigation and adaptation to climate change
Relationship between greenhouse gas increase and temperature
Variations of the main parameters in the oceans and ecosystems
Application of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement
Use of flexible mechanisms (CDM and JI)
The EU Emission Trading System (2003/87/CE)
Calculation and monitoring methodologies of the greenhouse gases for production plants under the EU Directive
Application of mitigation measures to the marine sector
GHG verification, accreditation/certification systems and the related carbon credits market
Kyoto Protocol
Paris Agreement
EU Directive 87/2003

The exam consists in passing a written test and an oral exam.
Three exam sessions will be foreseen during the summer session (June, July and September) and four exam sessions will be foreseen during the winter session and during the fall stop of the Polytechnic School. No extraordinary further exam sessions will be issued outside the regular Polytechnic School periods, with the exceptions of students without didactic activities in their current academic year curriculum.
The written test consists of drawing up a report on greenhouse gas emission calculation, evaluation of different GHG emission or mitigation/adaptation options.
During the oral examination, there will be questions on the topics covered during the frontal lessons and present in the teaching material provided.
Quality of the presentation, correct terminology and critical thinking skills will also be evaluated.
