This course aims to provide students with historical notions and the critical and methodological skills to understand and contextualize the topic of industrial design, going back to its very first appearance, and analyzing its various developments throughout history. During the course, the main concepts and theories will be discussed, as well as the different definitions of the concept of industrial design, according to various historical and conventional norms depicting the different cultural environments through which industrial design developed.
The history of design is at the same time the history of culture, in which daily life objects need to be read within the context of the complex and not always linear evolution of taste, consumer habits, and the industrial universe'.
This course will analyze the themes and developments of design from its earliest stages, through a chronological and geographical analysis of the topic. The key concepts and main theories and various definitions will be analyzed and commented, contextualizing the non-linear evolutions of design through historical and formal references.
During the lectures, students will follow the chronological and geographical sequence of the themes, also providing their fellow students with relevant historical background in order to adequately interpret the various cultural, social and economic evolutions and mutations of design.
Learning outcomes
The lectures and the assessments aim to highlight the relationship between this course and the topic of design, effectively providing students with a solid cultural background.
The course aims to make students understand and identify artifacts and their relationship with their context. Lectures will alternate between general themes and more in-depth topics. The goal is to develop students' ability to link artifacts, historical moments and social effects, preparing them for their final University examinations and, in the long term, providing them with solid foundations on the historical and cultural background of design.
