|SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR||MAT/03|
Prerequisites (for future units)
The course is aimed at providing the basic concepts and tools of linear algebra and analytic geometry. It is a first semester course of the first year which introduces concepts that will be used in many subsequent courses.
Basic teaching of linear algebra and analytic geometry. Complex numbers. Linear systems, Gaussian elimination, matrices and determinants. Vector spaces. Eigenvalues and diagonalization. Quadratic forms. Analytic geometry in the plane and in space.
The course aims to provide basic concepts of linear algebra and analytic geometry, developing a "scientific" approach to study and an ability to use the tools provided to solve problems.
The student is expected to reach the ability to understand the text of an exercise / problem, set solutions through appropriate tools (chosen from those provided in the course), solve exercises / problems in a "non-mechanical", reasoned, autonomous way and express results and conclusions clearly and precisely.
Basic mathematical knowledge acquired in school
Lectures will be devoted to developing the theoretic part of the course, as well as to solving problems aimed to a better understanding of the theory. There will be additional hours (tutorato) devoted to discussion of exercises suggested by the lecturer.
Sets. Complex numbers and polynpmials. Linear systems, matrices, gaussian elimination, rank and determinants. Vector spaces, homomorphisms and diagonalization. Quadratic forms. Analytic geometry in 2-space and 3-space.

In accordance with the manifesto.
Written test consisting of some exercises to be solved of the type seen during the course and possible oral test. Details will be communicated on Aulaweb.
The exam verifies that the student has acquired the required skills, and knows how to use and express them in correct terms. In particular, it will assess the ability to solve exercises relating to the main topics covered in the course, with adequate explanations on the procedure and a clearly expressed conclusion.
