    OVERVIEW

Heat transfer is a branch of thermodynamics whose aim is to study the laws of propagation of thermal energy. The role of heat transfer is crucial in the correct design of electric/electronic devices; its study is deemed to be of great importance in the preparation of students in electrical engineering.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides knowledge of heat transfer basic mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation)  as well as advanced topics addressed to the field of thermal control of electric/electronic devices.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course is aimed at providing the basic knowledge, from the theoretical (heat transfer laws) and practical (problem solving) standpoints, with particular reference to thermal control and cooling of electric/electronic components.  At the end of the course, the student is expected to face and solve basic heat transfer problems, with particular reference to electronic equipment cooling.

    PREREQUISITES

Italian students are required to have successfully passed the exams of Analisi 1 + Geometria,  Fisica Generale and Fisica Tecnica before applying for the exam of Trasmissione del Calore

    TEACHING METHODS

The time-schedule of the course is five hours per week (second semester only)

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introduction: thermal problems in electric/electronic systems

Conduction heat transfer: Fourier postulate, 1D and 3D conduction equation in plane and cylindrical coordinates. Contact resistance. Thermal-electrical analogy. Thermal transmittance. Transient conduction. Numerical techniques. Practical examples.

Convection heat transfer: Newton equation, external and internal boundary layer. Forced and free convection. The heat transfer coefficient: correlations among nondimensional groups; practical examples. Phase changes (condensation and vaporization)

Radiation heat transfer: Stefan-Boltzmann law. Black and gray surfaces, radiant heat transfer among black and gray surfaces; practical examples.

Conventional and compact heat exchangers. Thermal analysis and design.

Electric/electronic equipment cooling: conduction, contact resistances, air and liquid convection, finned surfaces, immersion cooling, heat pipes.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

Examination: oral. Examination dates are scheduled according to the official calendar.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

Oral examination, based on a specific subject among those tackled during the taught course, with in addition a couple of small synthetic questions on other one/two subjects.

The aim of the examination is to assess the capability of solving specific thermal problems (including physical formulation and mathematical passages) and the skill in discussing and arguing them.
