OVERVIEW

The course gives representation to the student of the entire roadmap leading to the international shared decision of the area of Neuroinformatics, at the bidirectional intersection between Neuroscience and ICT, as a big science problem, having relevant impact in neurology and neuropsichiatry as well as in the field of bio-inspired devices and applications, so as defined at OECD level in 2002 and realized thorugh the instituiton of INCF, the International Neuroinformatics Facility: www.incf.org, at the Karolinska Insitute in Stockholm, where a full detailed description of all the Neuroinfromatics topics may be found.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The educational objective of the Neuroinformatics course is to enable the student to use ICT tools for the study of neuroscience and, at the same time, to stimulate his reflection on how knowledge of neuroscience can be a useful source for him to the conception of new ICT paradigms. This objective characterizes Neuroinformatics, through research and training, to produce knowledge capable of generating social and economic value both in the domain of neuroscience and in the ICT domain.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Making the student aware of the great potential for R&D e practical applications of an integrated approach betweeen neuroscience and ICT (according to a sort of feedback model).

PREREQUISITES

3 year Laurea degree in Biomedical Engineering.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures in classroom.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Categories of neuroscience experimental data, structural and functional bioimages integration of the human central nervous system, structural and functional elements of the human central nervous system, neurons, synapses and neurotransmitters, ICT techniques to define models describing neuropharmacological aids and neurotransmitters interactions. Distributed data sharing and mathematical programming techniques for the optimization in the management of complex and large/big neuroscience data.
