Membranes are applied in a large range of separation processes. Nowadays, membrane technology can be found in all industrial areas. This course will provide an insight into membrane based separations to attain different objectives: concentration, purification, fractionation, reaction mediation. Students will acquire in-depth knowledge in in the area of membrane properties and preparation, module assemblage, separation mechanisms, transport phenomena. The focus will be on various applications of membrane technology with special attention to engineering problems and solutions, feasibility and economics.
The aim of this course is to help the students to attain a basic competence in using membrane technology principles for separation in chemical processes.
Students are expected to demonstrate the following industry oriented learning outcomes:
Describe the function of a given membrane
Identify the ideal membrane for a given task
Classify and explain preparation methods from a given material
Master the principal membrane characterization techniques
Apply various transport models to assess the membrane flux and the extent of separation
Select a membrane process to carry out a specific separation
Compare a given membrane technology with other separation methods
Apply membrane technology in process industries.
Basics of transport phenomena and thermodynamics
Lectures
Introduction to membranes and membrane processes

All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
Oral examination (one-hour discussion on the course contents in order to assess the achievement of the learning outcomes).
The purpose of the oral examination is to assess whether the student has acquired the main concepts associated with the topics addressed during the course, and if he is able to apply them critically.
In case of emergency and only according to specific indications by the University of Genoa, the assessment method for the exam might be changed, including the possibility of an online procedure.
