    OVERVIEW

Students acquire mastery in the calculation of the structures to wind actions and sensitivity to recognize the structures sensitive to aeroelastic instability phenomena.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the fundamentals and the operative techniques of wind engineering with special regard for wind actions and effects on structures.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge of the fundamentals of Structural dynamics is required.

    TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures during which theoretical, experimental, and numerical applications are illustrated, with examples related to real structures. The students develop, in small working groups, an assisted project report related to a real structure.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    1. Introduction to wind engineering. 2. Wind: Atmospheric circulation. Mean velocity. Turbulence. Probabilistic analysis and climatology. Mesoscale phenomena. 3. Aerodynamics: Bluff-body aerodynamics. Internal fluxes. Pedestrian comfort. Wind tunnels. CFD. 4. Dynamics: Alongwind response. 3D response of slender structures. 3D response of buildings. Wind-induced response to thunderstorms. 5. Aeroelasticity: Vortex shedding and lock-in. Alongwind wind-structure interaction. Crosswind galloping.
