TEACHING MATERIALS | AULAWEB |
The course, scheduled in the second half of the academic year, aims at introducing students to the principles of coastal structures planning and design with a focus on breakwaters and quaywalls
Learning outcomes of the course are the capability of the student to plan and design any kind of breakwater for harbour protection and to set-up a preliminary design of different types of quaywalls
The teaching aims to provide the basic knowledge for a general framework of problems related to:
- Mete-ocean climate analysis for the identification of the environmental characteristics of the project
- Design of maritime breakwaters for the protection of harbors
- Preliminary design of structures for the construction of port quays
- Preliminary design of the areas of ship repairs and marinas and fishing harbors
- Preliminary design of maritime structures on piles
The course will be held mainly through frontal lessons with the help of slides.
There will be some talks by professionals in the sector to illustrate to students the main issues related to maritime structures and construction
There will be some practical lessons with the use of computers for the development of specific algorithms for the design of maritime works
A visit to the Port of Genoa is planned

All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
The exam consists in a discussion on the contents presented during the course
The examination test consists of an oral discussion of the subjects carried out in class during the course. In particular, attention will be paid to the protection structures of port mirrors, types for the construction of dock structures, port areas intended for special uses (repairs and shipyards, fishing and tourist ports).
The oral test can be taken from the first day after the end of the lessons.
