The course provides the fundamentals of atmospheric physics necessary to understand, from a phenomenological and quantitative point of view, those aspects of applied meteorological and climatology relevant to civil and environmental engineering
The course provides the basic knowledge of the behaviour of Earth's atmosphere and the ability to analyse the main meteorological phenomena, with particular reference to the role of water in the atmosphere and the dynamics of the planetary boundary layer.
At the end of the course, students will be able to understand and distinguish the main meteorological phenomena that affect, at mid-latitudes, the dynamics of the atmospheric boundary layer and the formation of stratiform and convective precipitation.
The course consists of approximately 50 hours of lessons in which some laboratory experiments and practical examples of numerical simulation of weather prediction will be also presented. At the end of the course there will be a visit at the Meteo-Hydrological Functional Center of Civil Protection of the Liguria Region.
Structure of the atmosphere. Energy balance of the Earth. Role of water in the atmosphere. Stability of atmospheric layers. Cloud microphysics and liquid and solid precipitation. International classification of the clouds. Dynamics of the atmosphere. Atmospheric circulation patterns. Extratropical cyclones. Numerical weather prediction models.

All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
The exam is divided into written and oral test. At the beginning of the written test, the student draws three arguments among those covered during the course and presented in a list that will be provided at the end of the classes. The written test consists in writing a short report concerning the drawn topics. After correction of the written test, the student is free to accept the grade or take the oral test.
The written exam will allow to evaluate the acquisition of the basic knowledge of the topics covered during the course and the correct learning of the technical terminology. The oral exam will allow to evaluate the student's ability to contextualize the role of this subject within the engineering disciplines of his interest.
