Geographical economics is a broad field which encompasses or connects with the economics of region, cities, location, trade, development (economic, social and human), growth and the correlated political issues. Academic research in these areas has gone in many directions and made lots of progress in recent years. As a consequence, the course aims at providing an integrated introduction to geographical economics, and presenting a global analysis of issues in geographical economics using case studies from over the world, which set up to explain the distribution of economic activity across space. Given the target audience the course, after an introduction to the topic and a discussion of the antecedents of geographical economics, will explain the structure and main results of the so-called core models of geographical economics on the basis of the empirical research and evidence and the modified empirical applications of the core model.
By the time you finish this course, you should be able to:
1) Understand how economic globalization works and why it matters for policy makers;
2) Understand “global space” by deconstructing the concepts of “space” and “spatial relationships”;
3) Understand the digital economy’s role in changing the concepts of borders and of behavioral surplus;
3) and understand how economic activity does not occur in a vacuum: it involves actual, ever-changing people and places, and is affected by historical trends and localized networks
The class will meet in remote through the platform Teams, and the learning process will be supported through the use of textbooks, articles, videos, and in-class activities.
Among the techniques that will be used are:
-Resource-based tasks: students will be given articles and/or videos, and discuss elements or answer questions about the topics to be addressed
-Simulation techniques: the instructor will provide the background information on a specific issue, and the students will adopt different roles, individually or in group, and explain how they would address the issue or problems to be solved
-Cooperative production: after reading an article or looking at a video, students will share, during an in-class discussion, the knowledge acquired and/or the issues highlighted. The instructor will monitor the discussion and the outcomes of the knowledge-sharing process.
