    PRESENTAZIONE

The course provides the fundamental knowledge on the plant sciences and plant ecology applied to the management, planning and design of Nature based Solutions within urban ecosystems.

    OBIETTIVI E CONTENUTI

    OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI

At the end of the course students: will develop an overview of plants as a living and effective element of the green technological project within urban ecosystems. They will be able to evaluate aspects related to the key role of plants in urban design and planning with particular reference to resilience to climate change and environmental sustainability; they will be able to recognize the main species characteristic of the phytocoenosis coherent with bioclimate of urban area; they will have the basic knowledge to evaluate which plants to use in Nature based solutions interventions, referring to the ecological characteristics and the distribution of the species in the different terrestrial ecosystems within urban areas.

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI (DETTAGLIO) E RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO

    • knowledge of characteristics and performance of the plant component in Nature Based Solutions within urban ecosystems
    • knowledge for the development and design of a plant component within a green envelope
    • knowledge of nursery material, performance, quality chosen
    • knowledge of the ecosystem services and disservices provided by the plant component (air pollution mitigation, microclimate improvement, allergies, toxicity, etc.)
    • knowledge of greenery to be used in sustainable urban design.
    • assessment of aspects related to the key role of plants in urban design and planning with specific reference to resilience to climate change and environmental sustainability.
    • basic knowledge to evaluate which plants can be used in green envelope-friendly interventions.

    MODALITA' DIDATTICHE

The course contents are acquired through several interactive teaching methods (e.g., flip teaching, word café, etc.), also involving additional experts. For students attending classes, activities, debates, and case studies research are also included. Field activities and surveys in urban green areas and green infrastructure complete the activities carried out in the classroom with direct observation and identification of effective plant species.

    ESAMI

    MODALITA' D'ESAME

The final exam includes the evaluation of the students’ skills considering methodological, theoretical, and practical knowledge of the topics of the course.

For the students following the classes, the evaluation includes also the exercises developed during the course and all the activities (from 1 to 3 additional points).

Please refer to the specific AulaWeb application for any updates on courses due to changes in the health and epidemiological situation.

    MODALITA' DI ACCERTAMENTO

    Students attending classes

The oral exam and the activities implemented during classes (e.g., debates) will evaluate the ability of the students to critically elaborate and relate the topics. The design exercise will allow verifying the abilities to apply the knowledge acquired and to qualitative evaluate the impact of design choices on the environment.

    Students not attending classes

The oral exam will evaluate the ability of the students to critically elaborate and relate the topics. In addition, thorough specific examples and cases, the abilities to apply the knowledge acquired and to qualitative evaluate the impact of design choices on the environment will be verified.

The evaluation also considers the quality of exposure and the correct use of specific terms.

Please refer to the specific AulaWeb application for any updates on courses due to changes in the health and epidemiological situation.
