The course illustrates various techniques and methods employed to enhance the engineering properties of soil and rock masses for construction purposes. These techniques are often used when the existing soil or rock conditions are unsuitable or inadequate to support intended or existing structures. Regarding existing buildings, students will first familiarise themselves with assessing the need for retrofitting interventions (such as excessive settlement and rotation or stability problems) that can be caused by both natural events (e.g., earthquakes, subsidence, groundwater oscillation, extreme rainfall, slope movements, etc.) and anthropic actions (e.g., tunnelling excavation, etc.). Secondly, students will learn the adequate intervention measures to be adopted in different cases, which can involve both the enhancement of the engineering properties of soil and rock masses (e.g., compaction, grouting, deep soil mixing, etc.) and structural reinforcement (e.g., soil nailing, underpinning, micro piling, etc.).
