PRESENTAZIONE

The course is aimed at improving the knowledge of the economic changes of European economy in the Twentieth Century, examining both its failures and its successes in responding to the challenges of the age.

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI

The main goal of the course is to offer a survey of European economy’s chronological development looking at the main factors of economic growth and at the various regimes that were introduced in Europe during XX century.

Specific attention will be paid to issues like the economic trends, the economic policies pursued by different governments, the role and the place of Europe in the global economic system.

1. Europe’s Laissez-faire system and its impact before World War I.

2.The interwars period. The rise of a regulated market system.

3. Economic dirigisme. The centrally planned economic system.

4. Mixed economy and the Welfare State in post World War II Western Europe

5. Europe facing globalization.

MODALITA' D'ESAME

For students who regularly attend lessons. Written exam with some open questions on main topics discussed in the course. The course grades will be based also on the quality and contribution of the student to groupworks in class.

For students who don’t attend lessons. Oral exam on the contents of the Text book (Ivan T. Berend, An Economic History of Twentieth-Century Europe. Economic regimes from Laissez-Faire to Globalization, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2016).

Goals of the course

Knowledge and understanding 
Students must acquire adeguate knowledge and effective understanding of the operation-mechanisms of economic systems in a comparative and long-term perspective. 
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding 
Students must learn to apply acquired knowledge and understand problems related to the current economic context as a result of its historical evolution. 
Judgment Autonomy 
Students must be able to use both conceptual and operational skills acquired with autonomy of judgment and skills in different application contexts. 
Communication Skills 
Students must acquire the technical language of the discipline to communicate clearly and unambiguously to specialists and non specialists. 
Learning Abilities 
Students must develop adequate learning skills so they will be able to elaborate autonomously the key issues of the discipline, especially in the working contexts where they will operate.
