Programme overview

Summary

The degree course in 'Maritime Science and Technology' belongs to the L-28 Degree Class.

It is part of the university educational path that proposes starting from the solid historical and cultural roots of the University of Genova in the Maritime sector proposes an academic curriculum that meets the competence standards specified in sections A-II / 1 and A-III / 1 of the STCW code, as amended by the Manila Convention of 2010 for the training of officers on board merchant ships.

Learning by doing

The aim of the course is to provide graduates with both the scientific basis of the disciplines in question, and the ability to use the techniques, systems, and instruments on board.

Graduates will gain knowledge of the national and international ship owning context through internship activities and partnerships to be carried out over the training program. The University has already partnership with important players such as V-Ship and Carnival.

From 2020, University of Genova has signed a collaboration agreement with 'Collegio dei Capitani di Lungo Corso e di Macchina', associated to Confederation of European Shipmaster’s  Associations for improving competence in the teaching activities.

Career perspectives

The courses will be held at UNIGE and will provide the following figures: 

  • Deck Officer, after an internship that must be carried out on board for at least 12 months, 4 of which in graduation curriculum and passing a state exam in addition to the professionalizing courses.
  • Officer at Management level (Marine and Electro-technical), after an internship that should be from 24 to 36 months as an Officer and passing a state exam.
  • Technical management employment with companies in the maritime sector.

Contents

The main objective of the Degree Course is to train technicians at the management level of the vessel and technical role in companies in the maritime sector as envisaged by STCW international code. The STCW is an international convention that defines the minimum standards of competence of the professional figures in the maritime sector. In Italy this convention was implemented by the Ministry of Transport through a law and several decrees.

Two curricula are considered covered by the proposed degree: ​​one oriented to the management of the ship (Deck Officer) and the other oriented to the management of on-board systems (engineer or technical role). 

The basic educational activities (45 CFU) and characterizing (45 CFU) at university level are aimed at raising thecultural level and logical mathematical abilities of the students so that they can understand the characterizing formative activities (both theoretical and application ones).

The laboratory and training activities have the aim to provide the training in order to facilitate the achievement of qualification to the profession of merchant marine officer.

The Degree Course provides an on board training period of 4-6 months. Alternatively, the internship can be carried out in companies in the maritime / naval sector.

The remaining credits are dedicated to Maritime disciplines, to English and the thesis.

Teaching is totally in English, the official language of the maritime sector.
