The course in brief

Presentation

The course stands out for the peculiarities of its educational offer, characterised by specialised contents in the business, economic, quantitative and legal disciplines related to the shipping, port and logistics sector. The course combines the historical economic vocation of Genoa and Liguria in the sea transport sector with an openness to national and international experiences and relations in order to train specialised professional figures, who are increasingly in demand in the maritime and port sector, both in the transport of goods and people.

The course is characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinarity, based on business, economic, legal and quantitative content. A further factor of excellence is the teaching staff, which boasts consolidated experience and specialisation in the field of transport and logistics, as well as close collaborative relationships with companies in the sector and institutions in the area.

Learning by doing

The traditional lectures are flanked by participative and innovative training activities: individual and group project work, preparation of business plans, use of software for planning and optimisation of processes as well as for data analysis. Testimonials from experts in the field, seminars and workshops with companies and institutions, visits to terminals, logistics centres and other experiences in the area are an integral part of the teaching offer.

The course is enriched by the possibility of numerous internships in companies operating in the port, logistics, and shipping sectors. In addition, students can spend a period of study abroad at prestigious universities that are part of international exchange agreements.

Objectives

The Master's degree course in Maritime and Port Economics and Management is aimed at creating professional figures specialised in the shipping, port and logistics sector.

The course of study is characterised by a strong international outlook in terms of the topics covered, the teaching methods and the opportunities to study abroad. This will enable students to understand the complexity of the sector and the main global challenges, with particular reference to innovation and sustainability.

The course is divided into interdisciplinary educational activities in the fields of business, management, economics, quantitative (statistical-mathematical) and law, which will provide you with an advanced and comprehensive preparation for assuming leadership and management responsibilities in maritime-port logistics companies and institutions.

The route

The EMMP training pathway emphasises the economic specificities of the regional context and its historical maritime vocation, while being characterised by a strong national and international openness. Part of the teaching is delivered in English in order to improve students' preparation to operate in an international context and to foster cultural exchange thanks to the increasing participation of students from European universities within the Erasmus+ programme.

The first year is devoted to the study of the economic, managerial, quantitative and legal foundations of maritime freight and passenger transport, intermodality, logistics and port services.

The second year delves into more specific and innovative topics through lectures, seminars and other training activities held by lecturers and industry professionals, as well as through field trips and visits to maritime companies, port terminals and logistics centres. In order to respond to students' interests and desires for specialisation, the study plan may be customised through the choice of alternative courses. This will make it possible to define a pathway more oriented towards maritime transport of goods and logistics or passenger transport and cruises. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their knowledge in a European and international perspective thanks to the international mobility programme, i.e. periods of study in foreign universities where they will attend courses on the themes of ports and shipping, and, more generally, of logistics and the supply chain.

The final exam will be an opportunity to carry out research activities and/or company internships, during which they will apply the knowledge they have acquired and gain greater awareness of the dynamics of the sector.
