The course in brief Presentation The Nautical Engineering Course aims to train a professional figure who possesses, in addition to a solid basic preparation, specific and in-depth knowledge in the fields of naval engineering and design. The nautical engineer must be able to understand, analyse and verify the designs of pleasure craft, as well as test, manage and direct the installation and maintenance of equipment on yachts and mega yachts. Learning by doing Frontal lectures in which students are introduced to the theoretical foundations of each course are complemented by: didactic workshops on nautical design and experimentation; work placements at shipyards, technical offices, classification/surveillance bodies; designing a boat as a degree thesis; conferences and workshops in the nautical sphere; university regattas; Professional outlets Employment in shipbuilding, repair and refitting yards for ships and pleasure boats, classification institutes and supervisory bodies, technical design and survey firms, companies and operators in the nautical sector. What you will learn Basic subjects The undergraduate education of the nautical engineer begins with the acquisition of the fundamentals of mathematical calculation, physics and general chemistry. Naval Architecture Study of the geometry and hydrostatic and hydrodynamic principles of a floating body. Shipbuilding The different types of boats, materials and construction methods, and criteria for the structural dimensioning of hulls are presented. Naval Facilities Study of components and configuration of propulsion systems, hull services and auxiliary machinery. Applied industrial design You will learn the aesthetic and design principles of boats up to 24 metres, using all the most commonly used tools (from hand-drawn graphics to the use of 3D modelling). Related courses in engineering The nautical engineer's technical training is completed with courses in structural analysis, electrical engineering, computer science and machinery and technical physics. Did you know that Boating Engineering is a unique degree course in the country and, in the way it is configured, unique in Europe too! More than 90 per cent of our graduates go on to a master's degree in Yacht Design and upon completion of their bachelor's degree find employment in the industry's leading shipyards and technical studios. At the 'G. Marconi' students, teachers and staff are united by their passion for boating. Throughout the year it is possible to participate in workshops, lectures, and the construction and refitting of boats designed by our students. Our students have in the past formed a crew and participated in the 'One Thousand and One Sail' university regatta, winning the 2012 edition! Italy has been the world leader in the superyacht sector (over 30 metres in length) since 2008, and has always been in the top 3 places in the world for the production of small and medium-sized yachts. Contents Design of pleasure boats up to 24 metres from both a scientific and technological as well as an aesthetic point of view. The nautical designer must possess professional competences in the disciplines typical of naval engineering as well as an equally solid preparation in the field of architectural composition and design applied to the nautical sector. What does it mean to design a boat? At the end of the course, the student demonstrates mastery of all the necessary skills (naval construction, naval architecture, ship statics, naval installations, design) by submitting the design of a vessel of up to 24 metres as thesis work. This work is possible with the collaboration of the lecturers of the five above-mentioned sectors who will verify the student's ability to conceive and present the project according to the criteria of stability, proportioning, strength, plant and design. Coordinator Welcome to the Nautical Engineering Degree Course website! Since 1990, we have been training designers for the yachting industry in an engaging environment, strongly committed to providing education geared to the needs of the industry with which our university campus also collaborates intensively in the field of research. Studying at the 'G. Marconi' of La Spezia will allow you to be part of an environment where the passion for boating is the unifying factor for students, lecturers, researchers and all the staff on campus. Everyone together with your fellow students and lecturers in an environment where the passion for boating is the unifying factor.
