The course in brief

Presentation

The Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology and Ecology is shared between the Master of Science degree classes in Biology and those in Environmental and Land Science and Technology. The establishment of this new degree is intended to integrate the expertise on a complex system such as the marine system that has long been present in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences (DISTAV) into a single organic educational pathway that meets the requirements of both classes.

Learning by doing

The course includes, alongside traditional lectures:

  • laboratories, classroom exercises and educational outings, to provide the basic tools for studying and observing what was learned in the classroom
  • stages and internships at affiliated institutions and companies
  • in-depth seminars held by lecturers and experts in the field.

Professional outlets

The master's degree graduate in Marine Biology and Ecology can work independently in the field of management, control and protection of the marine environment, in its biotic components in relation to abiotic components and anthropogenic activities. The graduate may register as a professional biologist section A, to carry out activities involving the use of advanced methodologies, and may continue his or her studies with a doctoral degree.

Did you know that.

An interclass degree

The establishment of an interclass Master's Degree in Marine Biology and Ecology stems from the need to train highly qualified and specialized figures capable of dealing with issues related to the marine environment with a multidisciplinary approach, integrating the more properly biological and ecological-managerial fields.

Integrated pathway

Specific objective of the course is to provide the student with an educational pathway in which knowledge in the biological field is applied to the study of the marine environment, thus uniting the disciplinary fields of LM-6 and LM-75 classes.

The latest findings in molecular biology and their applications in the marine field (Blue Technologies) are essential for a modern approach to these topics. Special emphasis is given to the study of marine biodiversity, in all its components, in all environments, and in its historical and relational becoming. The applicational aspects of environmental research are also covered extensively, to develop project skills in monitoring, management, protection and conservation of marine environments, as well as skills related to the management of aquaculture facilities, aquariums, parks and marine protected areas.
