Programme overview Summary The Bachelor Programme 'Maritime Science and Technology' belongs to the L-28 Degree Class by Italian rules of the Ministry of the University and Research. It is a scientific-economic academic program that embraces the IMO-STCW requirements for Officers. The Program consists of two curricula: the Deck Officer curriculum embraces the competences specified in sections A-II/1 and A-II/2, while the Marine Engineer and Electrotechnical Officer curriculum embraces the competences specified in sections A-III/1, A-III/2 and A-III/6 of the STCW Convention. The cultural roots of the University of Genova in the Maritime sector date back at least two centuries, the School of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has been established in 1870 and the School of Economics has been established in 1885. Learning by doing The aim of the Programme is to provide undergraduates with both: the scientific basis of the disciplines, and the ability to use techniques, systems, and instruments on board. Undergraduates will gain knowledge of the national and international shipping context through internship activities and partnerships to be carried out over the training program. The University has already partnership with important players such as V-Ship and Carnival. The internship onboard as Cadet is only allowed to students that have a valid Sea Book issued by an eligible national authority, i.e. Panama Maritime Authority, etc. All other students will have the internship ashore. From 2020, University of Genova has signed a collaboration agreement with 'Collegio dei Capitani di Lungo Corso e di Macchina', associated to Confederation of European Shipmaster’s Associations, for improving competence in the teaching activities. Career perspectives The classes will be held at UNIGE (Scuola Politecnica and Dipartimento di Economia) and will provide the background for many jobs in the maritime sector, like the following: Marine Engineer, Electrotechnical and Deck Officer, after an internship that must be carried out on board for at least 12 months, 4 of which in graduation curriculum and passing a state exam in addition to the professionalizing courses. The STCW is an international convention that defines the minimum standards of competence of the professional figures in the maritime sector. In Italy this convention was implemented by the Ministry of Transport through a law and several decrees. Two curricula are considered covered by the proposed degree: one oriented to the management of the ship (Deck Officer) and the other oriented to the management of on-board systems (engineer or technical role). The basic educational activities (45 CFU) and characterizing (45 CFU) at university level are aimed at raising thecultural level and logical mathematical abilities of the students so that they can understand the characterizing formative activities (both theoretical and application ones). The laboratory and training activities have the aim to provide the training in order to facilitate the achievement of qualification to the profession of merchant marine officer. The Degree Course provides an on board training period of 4-6 months. Alternatively, the internship can be carried out in companies in the maritime / naval sector. The remaining credits are dedicated to Maritime disciplines, to English and the thesis. Teaching is totally in English, the official language of the maritime sector.
