The course in brief

Presentation

The Earth's dynamics over time has generated continents and oceans intertwined with the development of life forms. The study of the geosphere and biosphere and interfering anthropogenic activities requires a multidisciplinary geological and biological approach, useful in understanding and managing complex natural systems and producing scientific advances and new analytical protocols. Our PhD prepares new generations of scientists and professionals for the study of complex geological and biological systems. The course provides knowledge, methodologies and interdisciplinary projects for land management, proper use of natural resources and management of natural and anthropogenic hazards. Italian and foreign experts, training periods at qualified research institutions, collaborative networks and national and international funding contribute to the training projects.

Training Objectives.

The course has two curricula with basic and applied research:

Earth sciences:

  • earth dynamics, genesis of oceans and orogenic chains, relief morphology, paleo-environmental reconstructions with fossil record
  • geological-environmental hazards, defense and land-use planning
  • finding, characterization and management of mineral, water, energy resources
  • conservation of natural/landscape and cultural heritage

Applied Biology in Agriculture and Environment:

  • characterization, enhancement and improvement of plants of agricultural and forestry interest
  • management of mountain and rural territories
  • conservation and enhancement of natural biodiversity
  • environmental redevelopment
  • biology applied to cultural heritage and urban green

Professional outlets

Historically, STAT Ph.D.s work in the Academy, in Research Institutions, as freelancers and teachers. Numerous STAT Ph.D.s have found employment as postdoctoral research fellows, then as researchers and then as professors at universities and research centers in Italy (Genoa, Milan, Pisa, Pavia) and abroad (Bremen, Montpellier, Marseille).
Other STAT Ph.D.s work as freelancers/consultants at associated firms or in spin-offs produced within the Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences at UniGe. Others work in companies in different sectors; still others are engaged in teaching.
