The doctorate in Science and Technology for Electrical Engineering and Complex Systems for Mobility (STIESCM) brings together the experiences of the previous doctorates in Electrical and Naval Engineering, active until the XXVIII cycle, and significant contributions from the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector, and aims to integrate them into a general framework of interdisciplinary character, consistent with the establishment of the Department of Naval, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (DITEN) at which it has administrative and scientific headquarters.
The Ph.D. has a strong scientific and industrial connotation with close ties with international, national realities and with the industry present in Liguria, which pool experiences in various fields (automation, energy, ICT, transport) to introduce "intelligence" in systems such as power grids, naval systems, automation plants, especially when dealing with complex systems.

Training Objectives.

The STIESCM doctoral program is based on a coordinated teaching activity with an intensive research activity, guided by tutors, supplemented also with stays in qualified foreign locations, intended to acquire skills in independent work, analysis, synthesis and development of innovative contributions. The structuring of the doctoral program is aimed at achieving three educational objectives:

  • preparatory training, to reduce any incoming educational debts, particularly in the areas of applied mathematics, acquire complementary skills, and facilitate the inclusion of students from different courses of study
  • basic research training
  • specialized research training

Professional outlets

The STIESCM doctorate opens access to the highest levels of scientific research in the fields of energy, automation, electronics, transportation, and environmental issues. Depending on interests, and personal aptitudes, PhD graduates can embark on a university or industrial career, with prospects including entrepreneurship. Experience shows that Ph.D.s are able to achieve significant personal results, in Italy and abroad, at research institutions, industries, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and engineering firms, undertaking freelance activities or opening up to post-doctoral positions oriented toward research and university teaching.

In fact, international and local industrial companies operate in Liguria in the two sectors involved in the PhD. Several of these companies have offered or continue to offer Ph.D. scholarships and absorb Ph.D.s by recognizing them for the experience gained in the doctorate.
