The course aims to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes, starting from some key topics of the sociology of education; specific attention will be set to sociology of schools, with references to the “scuola dell’infanzia” and “ scuola primaria”.
Providing introductory knowledge of the discipline, starting from some of those thematic fields that are most important in relation to teacher training.
"Scuola dell’infanzia": The goal is to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes about primary socialization, developing the critical mind and the ability to analyze the social context beyond prejudices and stereotypes]
"Scuola Primaria": The goal is to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes about secondary socialization, developing the critical mind and the ability to analyze the social context beyond prejudices and stereotypes
For foreign students o specific prerequisites related to knowledge of the discipline are required.
The lessons will be provided in modules, focusing each the main course’s themes.
The lessons will take place in presence. We altern frontal lessons and interactiv lessons, in which students will be asked to actively participate, through the use of different methodologies: brainstorming, guided discussions, discussions with invited experts, group work, coffee work, analysis of video material . Students will be required to actively participate (individually or in group activities), both during the activities proposed in the classroom and by studying on materials provided by the teacher and uploaded to aulaweb.
The students’ attendance is not mandatory however all the activities carried out in the classroom are an important part of the course andthe participation in them will contribute to the final evaluation. Videos and images produced by the visual sociology laboratory (DISFOR) will be exploited as well
Different macro -argumetns will be developed (whit a particular attention about differences between “scuola dell’infanzia” and “scuola primaria” and the children’s ages) :The sociological study of educational processes; socialization and identity; theories of childhood; inequalities in education; the relationship betweenschool and family; changes about family in the XIX, XX century; the role of teachers; migration processes and education system

SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION
oral interview and written test in itinere (during the lessons)
Assessment of students’ learning will take place with tests ( durimg the course) and an final oral inteview.
The tests will be carried out in order to verify the understanding of the topics addressed; due to the impossibility of carrying out the lessons in the presence, these tests will be proposed through the aulaweb platform.
The final oral exam with open questions, in which the student will have to demonstrate knowledge of clear theoretical references and precise concepts on the foundations of the sociology of education and on the different topics covered during the course. In addition, competence in the specific use of disciplinary terminology used to analyze educational phenomena will be assessed
Foreign students must contact the teacher in person before the exam
Students with DSA (Specific Learning Disorders) disabilities or other special educational needs have to contact the teacher (e-mail: f.lagomarsino@unige.it) at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods, that take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory tools. For international students, texts and articles in English are available on request. The exam can be taken, in the manner provided, in English.
