The course will provide an outline of the geological features of the polar regions of the Earth (i.e.; Antarctica and Arctic). Students will get an overview of the main geological research activities and methods applied for the study of remote areas, as well as a glimpse about explorations and scientific expeditions.
The course provides a basic knowledge of the geological features of the polar regions of the Earth (Antarctica and Artic) and of the main geological methods applied for the study of remote areas.
Students will acquire knowledge about the polar regions concerning: - physiography, geodynamics and geology of the polar regions; main geological provinces and lithological features of Antarctica and Arctic; inreaction processes between lithosphere and cryosphere; exploration and scientific research expeditions; main geological methods of investigation applied in remote areas.
Basic knowledge of geology and geography.
The teaching activity is organised in lectures and seminars. Lectures are delivered through multimedia presentations.
Main topics:
- Introduction and overview of geography and physiography of the Polar Regions
ANTARCTICA - Geology of Antarctica: cretons and orogens - Geologic history and geodynamic evolution
- The Transantarctic Mountains - Mineral resources and the Antarctic Treaty ARCTIC - The main geological Provinces of the arctic region - Geologic history and geodynamic evolution
- Geology of the West Spitzbergen Fold and Thrust Belt (Svalbard)
- Mineral resources e the Svalbard Treaty ANTARCTICA AND ARCTIC
- Exploration and research scientific expeditions - Geological methodologies of investigations applied to remote areas

Students will be evaluated by an oral presentation of a small research project or an oral examination that consists of questions related to the topics discussed during lectures and seminars.
The purpose of the oral examination will be to verify if the student has acquired an adequate level of knowledge of the arguments of the course. The ability of the student to discuss properly the arguments and to use an appropriate terminology will also be evaluated.
Although attending the course is not mandatory, it is highly recommended to join the classes.
