OVERVIEW

The course deals with the development of integrated urban planning and product design projects, by understanding the phenomena of construction, abandonment and recycling of urban space, exploring the different forms of use and (re)appropriation by the communities.
Questioning the nature of these Transitional Landscapes allows the students to enhance their experience in reading into, interpreting and designing cities by means of open compositional models based on finite components, which scalability and transferability will be tested.
Moving from the theoretical positions of Landscape Urbanism and Inclusive Design, students will explore a multi-scalar vision “from the spoon to the city” (E.N. Rogers, 1952) where small inputs influence the large scale and vice versa. A vision essential to the designer's professional training against the challenges of contemporary urban design.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course, developed through a research-by-design methodology, has the twofold objective of training students to understand the structuring elements of urban space and landscape and define urban interventions to foster environmental regeneration and urban well-being in a multiscale perspective. The aim is to provide theoretical and design tools to guide the student through an educational path from macro-urban scale > to design zooms > to design of products, furniture and services with particular attention to resource planning (sustainability), processes of citizen involvement (inclusiveness), architectural quality of the proposal (beauty): the principles of the New European Bauhaus.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The qualifying learning outcomes are:

• the acquisition of analytical-design skills to read critically the structuring elements, constraints and development potential of the urban intervention;
• The development of a design methodology that is sustainable, incremental and consistent with the environmental, cultural and social aspects of the design context;
• the ability to synthesise the project through diagrams, maps, architectural drawings and visions able to synthesize the urban design concept and its replicability in other realities;
• the ability to identify appropriate design references, through a collection of significant best practices developed at a national and international level.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of urban planning formal languages and techniques acquired through the course Fundamentals of Urban Planning (or similar), and proficiency in graphics and digital design skills, which can be acquired independently or through the Fundamentals of Computer Aided Design course, is required.
