CODE 49182 ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 SCIENZE INTERNAZIONALI E DELLA COOPERAZIONE 10177 (LM-52) - SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR M-STO/04 LANGUAGE Italiano TEACHING LOCATION SEMESTER 1° Semester OVERVIEW Since the second half of the 19th century, and even more since the first decades of the 20th century, political parties have been the main tool for citizen participation in political life. Therefore, the 20th century was, in many respects, the century of the parties: consequently knowing their history, programs, leaders, organization and methods of propaganda is indispensable for the understanding of the years comprised between World War I and the end of the Cold War. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview on the history of political parties and political movements in Italy and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, whose history will be examined in reference both to the great political families (liberal, socialist, communist, Catholic, fascist, etc.) and, more generally, to the evolution of the international context. LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO) Provide the analytical tools which are fundamental to understand the political processes that characterize contemporary history; allow the students to orient themselves in the panorama of historiography; encourage a critical approach to events. TEACHING METHODS The course includes 18 two-hour lectures; during the lectures slides will be projected, documents distributed, discussions organized. Attending students will also present an individual research on issues related Euroscepticism. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course is divided into two parts: a general part, which aims to trace the fundamental features of the genesis, development and transformation of political parties and movements in Italy and in Europe between 19th and 20th centuries, and a specific section dedicated to training and prospects of European parties (EPP, ESP, SE, ALDE, Greens, etc.), as well as the role played by the movements for European unity in the EU integration process. Special attention will be devoted to the topic of Euroscepticism, which is the topic of discussion especially after the unexpected outcome of the British referendum.
