OVERVIEW

The course gives specific competences on the main tecnologies used for polluted site remediation and solid waste treatment (about 50% of the hours per item) trough frontal lessons, case studies analysis and visit to treatment plant. Beside plant design aspect, the course provides competences on process sustainability in order to compare different remediation technologies and different waste treatment plant, finding the better planning solution

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course consists of a huge analysis of soil and subsoil remediation and waste management with the aim to transfer to the students knowledge and competence in the application of environmental sustainable process.

Further aim is the knowledge of methods and technologies with low environmental impact.

- knowledge of integreted waste management systems

- learning of Life Cycle methodology applied to waste management

- knowledge of main remediation technologies

- learning of risk analysis applied to polluted sites remediation

TEACHING METHODS

5 hours/week of frontal lessons, on tuesday between 14.00-16.00 and wednesday between 14.00-17.00

The course includes one visit to a waste treatment plant and the analisys of several case studies

- analisys of 4 case studies of solid waste landfills

- analisys of 1 composting plant

- direct combustion

- analisys of an incineration plant

- gassification and pyrolysis

- air, solid and liquid emissions treatment

- polluted sites remediation - regulatory background

- soil caractherisation

- soil and subsoil drains and treatments

- biologic, chemical and physical treatments

- risk analysis

- emergency and permanent safety measures
