The course deals with the fundamentals of structural mechanics and related solution tecniques for the design of beams, frames and trusses.
The aim of the course is to supply the fundamentals to analyze the mechanical behavior of beams, frames and trusses as basis for their structural design under the elastic regime.
The aim of the course is to supply the fundamentals of: (i) the structural mechanics, focusing particularly on the static and kinematic classification of beams, frames and trusses and on the analysis of internal forces, deformations and displacements due to arbitrary loads; (ii) the mechanics of a three‐dimensional deformable medium in the linear field, according to the Cauchy model, focusing particularly on the solution of the De Saint Venant problem employed in structural applications.
The course consists of 60 hours of lecture, which alternate theoretical concepts with applicative examples.
Kinematic and statics of systems of connected rigid bodies. Internal forces in statically determinate beams structures. Linear elastic problem for the plane beam. Deformation and displacement of statically determinate beams structures. Force and displacement solution methods for statically indeterminate structures. The Cauchy continuum. Static and kinematic problems, linear elastic constitutive model and elastic limit for deformable solids. The De Saint Venant problem and fundamental resultant loadings (normal force, bending moment, shear force, torsional moment). Strength verifications. Stability of equilibrium.
