The course is aimed at: revising basic arithmetics and geometry contents to be taught; developing didactical competences in mathematics teaching; developing competences in planning, implementing, critically revising teaching sequences and carrying out efficient assessment strategies.
The aims of this part of the course are: A. to revise and further develop the theme of rational numbers (fractions, decimal representation, representation on the number line); B. to revise basic geometry notions (length and surface measurements; elementary plane and space geometry concepts). Both subjects will be treated with reference to teaching in grades K to 5.
Laboratory-style lessons (individual work on worksheets + class discussions).
Participant students are expected to attend to minimum 2/3 of the lessons, fill out the worksheet and do some homeworks. They are also required to write down, in groups, the notes of the lessons.
Non participant students are expected to fill the worksheets at home and send them to the teacher.
The concept of number and its uses for counting* and measuring*, its representations, numerical structures and their properties; computing and its semantic ans syntactic conventions; the concpet of algorithm and the representation of algorithms.
The concept of angle*, parallelism, direction, perpendicularity (in plane and in space); areas; theoretical figures and drawings; formulas and their syntactic and semantic meaning.
The aforementioned contents will be treated in reference to current National Guidelines and to the related teaching and learning problems, with a focus on linguistic and representation aspects.
Worksheets and reading materials will be provided during the course. At the end of the course a revised version of the notes of the lessons will be provided.
