This course provides an introduction to literature of this period. In the first part of the course you will learn about techniques of studying fictional texts and understanding them within their social, political and cultural contexts. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course you should have: - Acquired an understanding of a number of important Enlightment/Romantic/Vormärz -texts - Developed an ability to read and analyse fictional texts - Developed an ability to understand social, historical and political factors that have influenced Enlightment/Romantic/Vormärz writers LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO) By the end of this course you should have: - Acquired an understanding of a number of important Enlightment/Romantic/Vormärz -texts - Developed an ability to read and analyse fictional texts - Developed an ability to understand social, historical and political factors that have influenced Enlightment/Romantic/Vormärz writers Students should have acquired an independent literary judgment. TEACHING METHODS 36 hours, 3 hours per week in the first semester Traditional lessons SYLLABUS/CONTENT The module covers the period from about 1700 to 1830. This course provides an introduction to literature of this period. All the lectures are in the first semester (36 hours, 3 hours per week). In the first part of the course you will learn about techniques of studying fictional texts and understanding them within their social, political and cultural contexts. This course is taken by all first-year students taking courses in German Studies. Students will have to read: "Emilia Galotti" di Lessing; "Kabale und Liebe" di Schiller; "Homburg" di Kleist; "Woyzeck" di Büchner. Some lectures will offer an analysis of: "Der Besuch der alten Dame" (Dürrenmatt); "Schachnovelle" (Zweig). Both texts are part of the "corso istituzionale". Lessons and readings in Italian. Attendance is not obbligatory, but heartily recommended. The exam will be a written paper.
