The course has as main objectives: Acquiring knowledge of the causes, behavior and prevention of infectious and degenerative diseases and their health and social impacts. During the course, the elements for understanding the Italian health organization are provided, and particular emphasis is given to the Health Promotion and Education to the health of populations.
At the end of the course, the student should have acquired the knowledge necessary for the prevention of degenerative and infectious diseases and for the health promotion.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Knowing the essentials of health care planning and organization, with particular reference to Italy;
- Being able to do a project of health education;
- To know the epidemiology of infectious diseases;
- Knowing how to counseling on compulsory and recommended vaccinations in Italy;
- To know the epidemiology of the main degenerative diseases;
- Knowing how to educate for prevention of the most important causes of death in Italy, cardiovascular diseases and cancer;
- Know how to make nutrition education;
- Know basic principles of school hygiene.

Introduction and history of Public Health. The organization of health services. Principles and strategies of Health Promotion. From Education to Health education . The health statistics and epidemiology, the keys of health promotion. Outlines of statistics, foundations and purposes of the statistical method, averages and variability, comparisons between percentages frequencies, comparisons between averages. epidemiological measures: description of the number of events, ratios, proportions, rates, indicators, data sources and their quality; the questionnaire. Epidemiological studies: descriptive studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, experimental studies, the association's criteria and confounding, screening tests, the mortality studies. Concepts of prevention: Primary, secondary and tertiary. Epidemiology and prophylaxis (compulsory notification, isolation, quarantine, disinfectants, vaccine, chemoprophylaxis, passive immunoprophylaxis) of infectious diseases with particular regard to: AIDS; viral hepatitis; Influenza; respiratory virus diseases; Tuberculosis; meningitis; Measles; Mumps; Rubella; chickenpox; Infections of Pneumococcus and Haemophilus Influentiae; polio; Diphtheria; Tetanus. Hygiene of the trips. Epidemiology and prevention of degenerative diseases, in particular cardiovascular diseases and cancers. School hygiene: The school building, orientation and distribution of the school environment space, the classroom, the school desk and school facilities. Confined environment hygiene. environmental health: water hygiene, waste disposal and air pollution, noise and electromagnetic pollution. Food hygiene and nutrition. First aid.
