The course aims to provide students with a basic knowledge on the Italian Health Service, with particular reference to the dental Health. Furthermore methodological and practical aspects of epidemiology and preventive medicine of dental diseases, infectious and degenerative diseases are considered. The course puts particular emphasis on the risks of infectious diseases transmission in the dental practice.
At the end of the course the student should know and be able to apply epidemiological and preventive approach in order to address the health problems and service, with particular reference to that specific dental interest, both for the individual and for the community. He must also know and apply the regulations for environmental protection and safety of workers in dentistry.
At the end of the course the student will:
- Know the Italian health organization and the dental care organization;
- Know how to apply the epidemiological methodology;
- Be able to conduct an epidemiological study of dental diseases;
- Be able to apply the methods of disinfection and sterilization;
- To know the epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases, especially those that are transmitted with the blood;
- To know the epidemiology and prevention of degenerative diseases;
- Have basic knowledge on environmental hygiene;
- Have basic knowledge on food hygiene.

Program description:
Introduction to Hygiene: definition, content, methodological tools. Health and Public Health. General Elements of Statistics, Demography and Epidemiology (epidemiological studies and rates). Education for Health: the basics (information-education, message, communication, organization of an educational intervention, evaluation of the effectiveness of health education interventions). Infectious diseases: etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and prevention. Sources and reservoirs of infection, mode of transmission. Notification, quarantine measures, diagnostic investigation. Disinfection, disinfection and sterilization with chemical and physical means. Viral hepatitis, by: HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV: etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and prevention. Viral hepatitis by other viruses: Background. HIV infection and AIDS: etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and prevention. Epidemiology and prevention of: Influenza, rubella, measles, chicken pox. Immunology: Background. Active immunoprophylaxis (vaccine prophylaxis), passive (serum injection) and chemoprophylaxis. Types of vaccines. Vaccination schedules. Vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type B, anti-pertussis, meningococcal and pneumococcal diseases. Chronic degenerative diseases (cardiovascular diseases, diabetic disease): etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and prevention. Hygienic environment. The water: demand, supply, possibilities of pollution, drinking water, disinfection, by chemical and physical means. The indoor environment: microclimate, indoor air pollution. Practical application of sterilization by: autoclave, stove, and chemical means. Prevention of dental caries. Prevention of periodontal disease. Prevention of oral cancer. Prevention of defects of hard tissues of teeth.
