OVERVIEW

The course aims at critically addressing the politics of government of displaced people’s (migrants, refugees, asylum seekers) mobility, by particularly focusing on the processes of transformation involving the political and territorial dimension of borders, their apparatuses and specific tools. In this perspective, a specific attention will be devoted to the blocks and restrictions affecting migration and asylum policies as an answer to the humanitarian crisis triggered by recent conflicts.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

While synthetically outlining the main traits of contemporary international migrations, the course will focus on the different conditions of displacement characterizing the experience of migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and the different politics of government addressing them at a national and European level. Particularly, by outlining the processes of transformation affecting political and territorial borders and their apparatuses and facilities, the attention will focus the specific crisis characterizing current European migration and asylum policies, further triggered by the conflicts and wars affecting Middle East and North Africa. The last part of the course will be therefore devoted to the analysis of the recent harshening in European border policies, by analyzing a series of both juridicp-political and material border’s tools and apparatuses whose aim is to further selecting and filtering migrants and refugees’  presence while increasing their precarious conditions of life.
