CODE 86914 ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017 CREDITS 7 cfu anno 2 BIOTECNOLOGIE MEDICO-FARMACEUTICHE 8767 (LM-9) - SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR BIO/10 LANGUAGE Italiano TEACHING LOCATION SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Module “Diagnostic Biotechnologies” To introduce students to the methods derived from basic biotechnologies that were transferred to medical diagnostics To know the main analyses of clinical biochemistry and their interpretation to verify metabolism and function of different organs Module “Nanotechnology” The aim of the course is to give to the students an overview of the most recent and advanced nanobiotechnologies and nanobiomaterials. In particular, the two aspects of nanobioscience and nanobiotechnology application take place: structural proteomics and functional proteomics. In the first case, the novel method of protein nanocrystallography and the advanced synchrotron radiation techniques, including micro and nano-focussed high intense synchrotron radiation and the new trends in radiation damage reduction are presented. In the second case, the most innovative technologies of protein microarrays NAPPA (Nucleic Acid Programmable protein Array) and their fluorescent-label as well as label-free technology of are demonstrated. In the both cases the application to the regenerative medicine are underlined TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons and laboratory. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Module “Diagnostic Biotechnologies” Medical diagnostics based on biotech methods Management systems of biotech industry and their use in medical diagnostics laboratories Strategic marketing for health market, business plan, cash flow Mass spectrometry in human diagnostics (Proteomics, Therapeutic drug monitoring) High speed cell sorting, single cell sorting Helth informatics, artificial intellingence, expert systems, computer assisted diagnosis Basic and advance immunometry methods, reading techniques Mission and vision of future medical diagnostics laboratories. Clinical Biochemistry Main laboratory test in clinical biochemistry Blood: hemochromocytometric test; electrophoretic profile of serum proteins; plasma enzymes in diagnosis; non-protein nitrogen. Hepatic function tests: enzymes (AST, ALT, GGT, AP), bilirubin, serum proteins. Glucose metabolism test: hormones regulating glycemia; causes for hyper- and hypo-glycemia; diagnostic parameter for diabete mellitus; laboratory tests in diabetic ketoacidosis; glucose tolerance test; glycosylated hemoglobin; ketonic compounds. Lipid metabolism test: lipoprotein and apolipoprotein classification and their metabolism; reference value for different classes of lipids; dyslipidemic phenotypes. Urine analysis and renal function test: physical chemical urine analysis; renal function test (creatinine clearance, BUN-blood urea nitrogen, urine concentration capacity. Endocrinology: hints to the function of the main hormones, basal levels and conditions of hyper-/hypo-secretion; laboratory tests in the different hyper-/hypo-secretion conditions.
