OVERVIEW

Rehabilitation from surgery, traumatic, vascular or neurologic events il always flanked by proper pharmacological therapies (antinflammatory, analgesic, anticoagulant…etc). The capability to correctly adjust a pharmacotherapy in accordance with patient physiopathology (age, gender, personal and familial history of disease…etc) represents a necessary skill for physiotherapists

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course of pharmacology is aimed to define the role of pharmacotherapy in rehabilitation pathways, with particular focus on how therapy must fit with patient’s physio-pathology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO)

The course of pharmacology is designed to teach that conscious use of drugs in physioterapy is a relevant issue that must consider, beyond symptomatology, other characterirtiic included, age, gender, concomitant pathologies and therapies, disease hystory of diseases…….etc). The course is composed by two sections: the first deal in particular, with pharmacokinetic showing that the interaction between drugs and the body can significantly varyaccording with personal physiological and pathological parameters. The second part illustrates those classes of drugs that more frequently help a patient during its rehabilitation (therapy of inflammation, pain, etc). The abuse of drugs in sport for doping purposes, will be also addressed, focusing on severe side effects (acute and delayed). use in sport doping

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching of pharmacology is made by frontal lessons

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

General pharmacology:

  • Introduction to pharmacology: definition of drugs, aims of pharmacotherapy.
  • Pharmacokinetic (Absorbance, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs), paraneters of pharmacokinetic ( Bioavailability, distribution volume, clearance and halflife).
  • Pharmacodynamic (drug targets, agonism and antagonism, side actions)

Pharmacology for cathegories.

  • Therapy of inflammation
  • Therapy of pain
  • Local anestetics
  • Anticoagulants
  • Miorelaxants
  • Drug abuse in sport doping

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The text which is best recommended to integrate the topics that have been addressed in lectures is the following:

"Lippincott's illustrated reviews: Pharmacology", Authors: Michelle A. Clark, Richard Finkel, Jose A. Rey, Karen Whalen. EDS. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam of pharmacology is represented by an interview

ASSESSMENT METHODS

It will be evaluated the capability of the student to place a given pharmacological class within a therapy, in which pharmacotherapy must be adjusted according yoth  physiological and pathological characteristics of patients.
