OVERVIEW

 

This course of Geriatrics is designed  to provide information on demographic aspects, physiological mechanisms of aging, on the evaluation of the geriatric patient and on the possibility of exercise in both the healthy old and the geriatric patient. The course will also take into account the major pathologies of the elderly, the preventive aspects of the diseases, and the functional recovery programs after acute pathology.

The aim of the course is focused on the acquisition of the ability to implement exercise activity and on the approaches suitable for the healthy and geriatric subject and for the person suffering from chronic degenerative pathologies through the knowledge in the area of biological and pathological aging and osteo-muscular activity .

Demography of aging

Aging of the osteo-muscular system and other organs

Homeostasis and characteristics of the geriatric patient

The old robust (fit) and the concept of frailty

Comprehensive geriatric assessment

Sarcopenia and osteodinapenia

Physical activity, positive effects and possible adverse effects

Major geriatric syndromes, postural instability

Dementia, Parkinson's disease, depression

Osteoporosis and fractures

The falls and their prevention

Exercise in chronic diseases

Adapted physical activity

 

The course will address the following items: the problem of the demographic revolution and the consequence on the health system; the biological aspects of aging, particularly the osteomuscular system, changes in walking capacity, the postural instability and sarcopenia; the characteristics of fragility and its evaluation, comprehensive geriatric assessment and assessment scales; the development of a physical activity program that can prevent and/or improve pathologies or stabilize disease conditions; improvement and stabilization motor performance through an individualized program; the possible unwanted effects of physical exercise; the main geriatric syndromes and the main elderly pathologies and utility of exercise; the mental effect of physical exercise; the causes and the prevention of falls, the fractures and the role of exercise in prevention and rehabilitation; the proper use of adapted physical activity.
