OVERVIEW

The essay aims to provide some knowledge of the subject, enabling the student to calculate and interpret some descriptive and inferential statistics among the most common in the paperwork.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO)

The aim of the course is to provide students to understand and apply knowledge in the medical field, in clinical practice and research, the main concepts and tools of medical statistics.

At the end of the course, students will have acquired a good knowledge related to the terminology used in the field of statistical-epidemiological. They will be able to use the right tools as appropriate methodological and statistical models necessary to assess the reliability of the collected data and to perform analysis of interest, integrating the acquired clinical experience with careful and critical analysis of the medical literature.

TEACHING METHODS

Front-end lessons and practical exercises using statistical software in groups.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1. Introduction:

Introduction to the course and specific goals.

Concepts and definitions of Medical Statistics; Descriptive and inferential statistics.

2) Programming a statistical survey:

Study design. Population and sample.

Sampling techniques: Simple, systematic, randomized casual, random number tables, random sampling of a sample into groups.

Definition and types of variables (qualitative and quantitative).

Data and measurements: measurement scales (nominal, ordinal, interval, and reports); Accuracy and precision, unit of measure and order of magnitude; Rounding a number; Absolute frequencies, relative, percentages; Measurement errors.

3) Descriptive statistics:

Synthesis and variability of data: central trend indices (analytical and position averages, quantiles) and dispersion indices (range of variation, variance, standard deviation, standard error, interquartile range, variation coefficient).

Graphical and analytical representation of phenomena: contingency tables and graphs (histograms and Cartesian diagrams)

4) Calculations of probabilities:

Event and Probability Concepts: principle of sum, product principle.

Probability Distributions: Gaussian Distribution.

5) Inferential Statistics:

Sample Distributions: t-student distribution, Fisher distribution, Χ2 distribution

Average confidence intervals and percentage frequencies. Building intervals for different levels of trust.

Principles of hypothesis verification: nothing hypothesis; Type I and II errors; Test power and sample size, test one or two queues

Parametric and non-parametric tests for hypothesis testing: Student T and U test of Mann-Whitney; Comparison between two samples (independent and employees); Contingency tables r x c (test Χ2 and McNemar test); Variance analysis (F test and Kruskal Wallis test)

Regression and correlation: regression and regression concepts; Least squares method; Correlation coefficient of Pearson and Spearman.

6) Statistics on epidemiology:

Health events; Observational and experimental epidemiological studies.

The concept of rate: prevalence, incidence.

Risk measures: relative risk of disease (RR), attributable risk (RA) and odds ratio (OR)

Screening tests and diagnostic tests: sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and ROC curves.
