LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO) This unit aims to complete the student skills in the naval architecture field through the study of topics relevant to high speed craft, namely planing hull forms and surface piercing propellers. TEACHING METHODS Lectures and exercises SYLLABUS/CONTENT Definition of planing. Resistance components of a planing craft. Influence of the hull geometrical parameters on motion resistance. Methods for the trim control of crafts. Methods for the resistance prediction of a planing hull: systematic series, statistical methods, Savitsky method. Surface piercing propellers RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Principles of Naval Architecture, SNAME, 1988 SAVITSKY D. “Hydrodynamic Design of Planing Hulls”, Marine Technology, October 1964.
